I know, the headline above may sound overly dramatic to you.

But I assure you it is not exaggerated.  Every word is true.

For starters, let me tell you about the first time I really embarrassed myself.

It was early in 1996 when I got the invitation call from Steve. "Lou, I have a business idea to run by you.  Do you have a few minutes to talk?"

Steve was quite successful at everything he did.  Everyone liked him.  Everyone trusted him.  So I said,  "yes, of course."

Well, it sounded like it had a huge potential for profit.  The risk was minimal, a couple of hundred dollars. So I thought, "What the heck.  Might as well give it a shot."  All I had to do was introduce a few other people to the same idea and the money would start rolling in.

But here's what happened.

I made my first appointment to go see an influential friend that I respected.  I arrived at his house in Tijeras, NM, close to where I lived at the time. I started telling him about the "business" but less than 10 minutes into the conversation he asked this question, "What makes this different from an illegal pyramid scheme?"

I thought I knew the difference.  "Well, this has products," I answered.

He said, "Lou, did you know that there are lots of illegal pyramid schemes that DO have products?  But they are still found to be illegal?"

That's when my face started heating up.

I didn't know that.  Truth be told, I really didn't have a clue about how to tell the difference between an illegal pyramid scheme and a legal MLM.

As it turns out, my new business really was a very thinly disguised pyramid scheme.  They were out of business within months.  We quit them faster than that!

I don't know about you, but I hate to embarrass myself.  I was embarrassed that I was so easily conned.  I was embarrassed that I almost conned a bunch of others, including a good and respected friend.

What I didn't know then, is that most illegal pyramid schemes try to make themselves look like the legal Multilevel Marketing companies. Some of them are very good at it.  They even fool (and embarrass) very good people.

Well, I'm sure you feel the same way; embarrassment is no fun!  Not a pleasant feeling at all.

I was to learn over the next few years, that embarrassment was the smallest risk we take when we join a network marketing company. Also at risk is our valuable time, our money—sometimes a lot of it, our relationships with our friends, family and co-workers, our reputation, even...our most cherished dreams.

The "I'm-mad-as-hell; they-pushed-me-too-far" point for me came when I thought I was going to lose my best friend to suicide.
